U.S. President Donald Trump stated that he will be making decisions regarding Iran in the near future.
These remarks come just two days after the first round of U.S.–Iran talks under Trump’s administration.
The White House described the discussions as “a step forward,” confirming that the talks, which involved Trump’s regional envoy, were “positive and constructive.”
Separately, Dutch Foreign Minister Kaspar Veldkamp and another diplomatic source confirmed on Monday that the next round of indirect negotiations between the United States and Iran regarding Tehran’s nuclear program will be held in Rome.
Minister Veldkamp, speaking at a European Union meeting, said the upcoming talks will be hosted in the Italian capital, with two Rome-based diplomats confirming that they will take place on Saturday.
Iran had previously announced that the talks would remain “indirect” and would focus solely on the nuclear file and the lifting of sanctions.
The Iranian delegation will be led by Deputy Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, a seasoned diplomat and one of the architects of the 2015 nuclear deal. The U.S. side will be headed by Steve Witkoff, President Trump’s special envoy and a real estate magnate. The two reportedly had a brief face-to-face encounter during the last round.
Araghchi to Visit Moscow
In parallel diplomatic activity, Iran’s Deputy Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi will visit Moscow later this week to discuss the outcomes of recent nuclear negotiations hosted in Muscat, ahead of the upcoming round of indirect talks in Rome.
Foreign Ministry spokesperson Ismail Baghaei announced Monday that Araghchi’s visit is “pre-planned” and will serve as “an opportunity to discuss the latest developments from the Muscat talks.”
