Official Data Reveals Number of Casualties Admitted to Israeli Hospitals on the Day of the Iranian Attack

October 1, 2024 witnessed a significant spike in the number of casualties admitted to Israeli hospitals, according to official data from the Israeli Ministry of Health. This coincided with an Iranian missile strike on Israeli targets and a simultaneous attack by two Palestinians in Tel Aviv. An analysis by Arabi Post highlighted that the influx of casualties on that day marked the second-highest number of admissions to Israeli hospitals in a single day since mid-October 2023.

Israeli Media Reports Two Saudi Conditions for Normalisation With Israel

The release of this data comes amid a comprehensive media blackout imposed by the Israeli military on the details of the casualties and general losses sustained on October 1, 2024. The impact of this blackout has extended to Israeli media, which has been unable to publish information related to the losses due to the constraints of military censorship, which restricts the dissemination of sensitive news.

The Iranian Missile Strike and Its Aftermath

On October 1, 2024, Iran launched a barrage of 180 missiles targeting Israel, claiming the attack was in retaliation for Israel’s assassination of Ismail Haniyeh, the former head of the political bureau of Hamas, who was killed in Tehran in July 2024, as well as the assassination of former Hezbollah Secretary-General Hassan Nasrallah and senior Iranian Revolutionary Guard officer Abbas Nilforoushan on September 27, 2024.

214 Casualties Admitted on the Day of the Iranian Attack

According to the Ministry of Health’s database, a total of 214 casualties were admitted to Israeli hospitals on October 1, 2024, alone. This notable increase followed a period of more typical admission rates that hospitals had seen since mid-October 2023.

The injured have been treated across 26 hospitals and medical centers spread throughout the northern, southern, and central regions of the occupied territories, as reported by the Ministry of Health.

From October 17, 2023, to September 30, 2024, the average daily number of injuries admitted to hospitals was 42. However, this number doubled on October 1, 2024, coinciding with the Iranian missile strike and a shooting attack in Tel Aviv.

This influx represents the second-highest rate of admissions since October 16, 2023, when Israeli hospitals recorded 227 injuries in a single day.

Peak Admission Rates: The First Days of the War

The highest rates of admissions to Israeli hospitals were recorded during the first three days of the war:

      • October 7, 2023: 1,456 casualties.

      • October 8, 2023: 475 casualties.

      • October 9, 2023: 306 casualties.

The sharp rise in hospital admissions on October 1, 2024, casts doubt on the Israeli military’s narrative, which claimed that the Iranian missile strike caused “no casualties.” The Israeli emergency service, Magen David Adom, reported that only two individuals sustained minor injuries due to shrapnel from the Iranian missiles.

Among the few officials who acknowledged damages from the Iranian strike was Amir Kochavi, the mayor of Hod HaSharon, a city north of Tel Aviv. He stated that “about 100 homes in the city were damaged following the Iranian ballistic missile attack,” though the municipality asserted that “there were no human casualties.”

Tel Aviv Attack and Increased Tensions

On the same day as the Iranian missile strike, Tel Aviv witnessed an armed attack carried out by two Palestinians from Hebron, resulting in the death of 7 Israelis and the injury of 16 others.

October 1, 2024, also saw the highest number of alerts triggered in the occupied territories since October 7, 2023. According to Arabi Post, a total of 2,120 alerts were issued on that day, with 1,869 alerts triggered by Iranian missiles and 251 by rockets launched from Hezbollah.

Since the onset of the war on Gaza on October 7, 2023, the Israeli Ministry of Health has established a database to track the number of casualties from the conflict. This data does not clearly distinguish between civilian and military injuries, but figures recorded during periods of intense shelling on Israeli areas provide critical insights.

Surge in Casualties Amidst Israeli Incursion into Lebanon

The Ministry of Health’s data also indicates a rise in hospital admissions since the beginning of October 2024, coinciding with Israel’s initiation of a “limited” ground incursion into southern Lebanon.

Between October 1 and 8, 2024, 939 injuries were reported, a significant increase compared to the average daily admissions before the ground incursion into southern Lebanon and the escalation of Hezbollah’s rocket attacks on Israeli towns and cities.

Since the beginning of the incursion into southern Lebanon, Israel has reported the deaths of 10 soldiers and injuries among dozens of others due to clashes along the border, where Israeli forces are attempting to penetrate from three fronts: Yaroun, Maroun al-Ras, and Adaisseh.

Israeli Censorship and the Ongoing Information Blackout

Amid the escalating situation on both the Gaza and southern Lebanon fronts, Israeli military censorship has tightened its grip on media outlets, preventing the publication of detailed information on ongoing operations, especially regarding human and material losses. At times, this censorship includes banning the dissemination of photos and videos, and warning against sharing information except through media channels under strict control.

The true number of casualties, both among Israeli soldiers and civilians, remains one of the most opaque aspects of Israel’s war on Gaza. The level of secrecy surrounding military losses in this conflict is unprecedented compared to previous wars. Reports from within Israel suggest that the army is deliberately withholding accurate figures of its losses to maintain public morale.

Despite the imposed restrictions, some Israeli media outlets, such as Haaretz and Yedioth Ahronoth, have previously published reports containing figures that contradict the official narrative provided by the Israeli military.

Data from the Ministry of Health, along with occasional leaks to Israeli newspapers, suggests that the official figures released by the Israeli army concerning the number of Israeli casualties lack accuracy.

Humanitarian Impact: A Tragic Toll on Gaza

The war, now entering its second year, has resulted in the loss of at least 139,000 Palestinians, including many women and children, and left thousands missing amidst widespread destruction. The humanitarian disaster has led to a famine that has claimed the lives of dozens of children, making it one of the world’s most severe humanitarian crises.

This ongoing tragedy underscores the devastating impact of the conflict, highlighting the urgent need for international attention and action to alleviate the suffering in Gaza.
