The Pentagon is preparing for a potential ground operation in Iran, according to unnamed US officials cited by The Washington Post. The proposed operation may focus on seizing Iran’s Kharg Island, a strategic energy hub.
Limited Operation, Not Full Scale Invasion
According to the report, the operation under consideration could last up to two months and would not involve a full scale invasion. Instead, it may be limited to coordinated attacks carried out by special operations forces and infantry units.
Kharg Island: A Strategic Target
One of the primary objectives would be to take control of Kharg Island, from which approximately 90 percent of Iran’s oil exports are shipped. The island also provides Tehran with significant leverage over maritime traffic through the Strait of Hormuz.
The operation may also aim to destroy Iranian weapons systems positioned along the country’s coastline, which President Donald Trump had previously claimed were fully neutralised.
High Risk for US Forces
The report highlighted the risks facing US troops if such an operation proceeds, given the strategic sensitivity of the region and Iran’s defensive capabilities.
White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt stated that the Pentagon is presenting options to the president, stressing that these preparations do not indicate that a final decision has been made.
Trump previously confirmed that he has not yet decided on launching a ground intervention in Iran, adding that he would not disclose such a decision in advance.
Conflicting Signals from US Officials
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio told his counterparts in the G7 that Washington is not planning any ground operation in Iran, reflecting ongoing ambiguity within the administration’s position.
Domestic Opposition and Public Rejection
The potential operation is facing resistance within US political circles. Lawmakers from the Democratic Party, along with some Republicans, have expressed concerns about the risk of being drawn into a broader war.
Recent polling indicates that 62 percent of Americans oppose any ground intervention in Iran, while 61 percent reject the war more broadly.
Diplomatic Track vs Military Escalation
In recent days, reports have suggested preparations for a large scale strike in the event that diplomatic efforts fail. Such a move could pave the way for Trump to declare victory, while leaving the responsibility of reopening the Strait of Hormuz to the international community.
