Iranian state television has claimed that the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) and the country’s armed forces are fully prepared to respond to any potential United States military escalation in the Arabian Gulf, raising tensions amid ongoing speculation of a broader regional confrontation.
During an interview broadcast on official Iranian television, an Iranian researcher asserted that if the United States were to commit what he described as a “strategic mistake,” Iran’s military forces would be capable of seizing the coastlines of the United Arab Emirates and Bahrain. He further claimed that such an operation would fundamentally reshape the regional balance of power.
Escalating Rhetoric Amid Reports of US Military Planning
These statements come at a time when reports are emerging about possible United States military actions targeting Iranian territory. According to sources cited by The Washington Post, US President Donald Trump has not ruled out the possibility of deploying American ground forces inside Iran.
Officials indicated that one of the scenarios under consideration involves the seizure of Kharg Island, a critical hub for Iran’s oil exports and a strategic asset in the country’s energy infrastructure.
Potential Deployment of Rapid Response Forces
In parallel, The New York Times reported that US military officials are exploring the option of deploying a combat brigade from the 82nd Airborne Division, along with elements of its command structure, to support ongoing military operations related to Iran.
According to these officials, such plans are currently framed as “precautionary measures,” and no formal decision has yet been announced by the Pentagon.
Sources further suggested that these forces, estimated at approximately 3,000 troops and part of a rapid response unit, could be utilised in swift operations, including a potential takeover of Kharg Island, which serves as Iran’s primary oil export terminal.
A Region on Edge
The combination of Iranian threats and American contingency planning underscores a volatile moment in the region, where rhetoric and military positioning continue to escalate. While no official decisions have been confirmed on either side, the developments reflect a growing risk of confrontation that could significantly impact the geopolitical landscape of the Gulf.
