Five aerial refuelling aircraft belonging to the United States Air Force were damaged while stationed on the ground at Prince Sultan Air Base in the Al Kharj region near the Saudi capital Riyadh, according to what the Wall Street Journal reported, citing American officials.
The officials stated that the aircraft were struck during an Iranian missile attack targeting the Saudi base in recent days. The United States Central Command declined to comment on the incident.
One official added that the refuelling aircraft were damaged but not completely destroyed and are currently undergoing repair operations. No casualties were reported as a result of the strikes.
This raises the total number of United States Air Force aerial refuelling aircraft that have been damaged or destroyed to at least seven.
The development comes after a collision that occurred on Thursday between two Boeing KC-135 Stratotanker refuelling aircraft, which resulted in one of them crashing to the ground. The United States announced on Friday that all six crew members were killed.
Iran has been targeting American forces and military equipment at bases spread across the region in response to the American Israeli attack on Iran.
An American soldier had previously died after sustaining severe injuries during an attack on the Saudi base on 1 March.
