French Member of Parliament Sabrina Sebaihi has revealed the existence of a website that tracks Muslims in France, monitoring their gatherings and places of residence.
Speaking to Al Jazeera Mubasher, Sebaihi, a representative of the Green Party, said the website allows users to identify the locations of Muslims across France and classify them by names and family backgrounds within different neighbourhoods. She added that it constitutes a direct threat to the security of Muslims and heightens fears of attacks, particularly amid the rise in assaults on mosques and incidents targeting women who wear the hijab in public spaces.
She explained that she came across a post stating, “If we want to search for a mosque or neighbourhoods with a high percentage of people bearing Arabic or Muslim names, there is a website that provides this.” She noted that the site is titled “Where Is France Heading?”
The French parliamentarian said she accessed the website and found interactive maps displaying all this data, warning that such activity threatens the safety of Muslims and could lead to them being targeted.
She added that the situation of Muslims in France has become dangerous, noting that many now conceal their identity out of fear of discrimination or attack.
Sebaihi also stated that she submitted an official complaint to the Interior Minister, requesting that the matter be referred to the public prosecutor and calling for a formal investigation to shut down the website.
She added that an anti racism organisation has also joined the case and submitted a legal complaint in support of judicial action.
The French MP said, “The Muslim is not an enemy to anyone. He only wants to live in peace in France,” stressing the need for everyone to stand against attempts to stigmatise society and turn it into a scapegoat, and to protect the rights of all citizens in the face of any hate speech or violence.
