The internet monitoring group NetBlocks reported that Iran is experiencing a complete nationwide internet outage today, Thursday.
NetBlocks said in a statement that “live data shows that Iran is now experiencing a near-total national internet blackout.”
It explained that this “comes in the wake of a series of digital censorship measures targeting protesters across the country and disrupting people’s right to communicate at a critical moment.”
In turn, US President Donald Trump said he would deliver a very strong strike against Iran and make it pay a heavy price “if it tries to suppress anti-government demonstrations.”
Trump added in an interview with conservative journalist Hugh Hewitt: “I have informed them that if they start killing people, which they tend to do during riots, they have a lot of riots, if they do that, we will hit them hard.”
Earlier, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian on Thursday called for “the utmost restraint” in dealing with the protests, which have entered their twelfth day across the country, amid reports of clashes in several areas.
Pezeshkian said in a statement published on his official website: “Any violent or coercive behaviour must be avoided,” calling for “the utmost restraint” as well as “dialogue, communication, and listening to the demands of the people.”
Earlier, Iranian media reported that a police officer was stabbed to death during unrest near the capital Tehran, as protests over rising living costs in Iran entered their twelfth day.
The Fars News Agency reported that “Shahin Dehqan,” a police officer in the city of Malard west of Tehran, was stabbed to death “while attempting to control disturbances in the area,” noting that authorities are working to identify those responsible for the killing.
The number of security personnel killed since the start of the protests has risen to four, in addition to 34 protesters, according to a report issued by the Iranian Human Rights Activists News Agency.
