While Washington was carrying out a cinematic boarding operation against an oil tanker flying the Russian flag and seizing it in cold blood, “nuclear Moscow” and “economic Beijing” were exercising the highest levels of restraint, or perhaps the highest levels of abandonment. In a scene that can only be described as farcical, the powers that once deafened audiences with talk of a “multipolar world” were reduced to mere extras, watching the United States redraw Venezuela’s map on its own terms.
It is bitterly ironic that the state possessing the largest nuclear arsenal in the world, armed with Sarmat intercontinental missiles, responded to the humiliation of its tanker with a statement dripping with embarrassment: “We are reviewing the reports and will look into the matter”. It appears that the “Russian bear” has entered an early winter hibernation, preferring to sacrifice its ally Maduro and the dignity of its flag in open waters in exchange for a delusional hope of a deal in Ukraine. While Donald Trump pounds the table and seizes oil, Vladimir Putin settles for diplomatic “concern”, as if nuclear missiles have become nothing more than decorative props for military parades.
Beijing: The Dragon That Hides Behind Silence
As for China, the “economic dragon” that threatens to shake the throne of the dollar, it once again proved that slogans of “strategic partnership” with Caracas are worth less than the ink used to print them. China, which claims to defend international navigation, swallowed its tongue as Washington imposed its harsh conditions on Venezuela, demanding it abandon Beijing and Iran. Beijing sold its Latin American ally in the grand barter market, choosing the role of the cautious merchant who fears losing his shop, even if the price is the permanent loss of geopolitical influence.
A Jungle That Respects No Cowards
The masks have fallen. Venezuela was left alone in the face of overt American moves, not merely because of Washington’s strength, but because of the weakness of its supposed allies. Russia and China, which were meant to form a wall of resistance, proved to be nothing more than paper tigers, skilled in rhetoric and absent in action. Today, there is no international law, only a law that recognises strength and protects allies. As for the “great powers” that chose to watch from the sidelines, they have reserved for themselves a place in the dustbin of geopolitical history as partners in the grand sell off of Venezuela.
