White House spokesperson Karoline Leavitt said on Wednesday that US President Donald Trump and his national security team are seriously examining the possibility of the United States purchasing Greenland from Denmark.
Speaking at a regular press briefing, Leavitt stated that all options are always on the table for President Trump, adding that diplomacy is always the president’s first choice.
The White House made clear that Trump has not ruled out the possibility of military action.
When asked why Trump does not exclude military action against a country that is a member of NATO, Leavitt replied that all options remain available to President Trump at all times.
She added that acquiring Greenland would give the United States greater control over the Arctic region.
Greenland is an autonomous territory affiliated with Denmark. It is the largest island in the world but among the least populated, and it is covered by the second-largest ice sheet on Earth after Antarctica.
The island is located between the Arctic Ocean and the North Atlantic Ocean.
Its inhabitants refer to it as Inuit Nunat or Kalaallit Nunaat, local terms meaning the land of the people, and they call its capital Nuuk by the name Godthab.
Greenland is geographically part of the North American continent, but from a geopolitical perspective, it is considered part of Europe due to its affiliation with Denmark. Vast areas of tundra and glaciers spread across the island.
Greenland lies northeast of Canada between the Arctic region and the Atlantic Ocean, with Canada being the closest country to it at a distance of only 26 kilometres.
The United States has attempted on several occasions to purchase the island, but both the Danish and Greenlandic governments rejected these efforts.
On 22 December 2024, Trump stated that the United States’ ownership and control of Greenland is necessary for national security and global freedom, and he hinted at the use of force to achieve this objective.
