Denmark’s Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen stated on Monday that any American seizure of Greenland would represent the end of the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation, NATO.
Frederiksen’s remarks came in response to renewed calls by US President Donald Trump to impose American control over the strategically significant, mineral-rich Arctic island. These statements followed the military operation that took place in Venezuela over the weekend.
Frederiksen and her Greenlandic counterpart Jens-Frederik Nielsen strongly criticised the US president’s remarks, warning of “catastrophic consequences”, while several European leaders expressed solidarity with their position.
Speaking to Denmark’s TV 2 broadcaster, Frederiksen said that “if the United States chooses to attack another NATO country militarily, then everything stops, including our alliance, and with it the security that has existed since the end of the Second World War”.
On Sunday, the Danish prime minister called on the United States to cease its threats against a historic ally, after Trump once again expressed the “need” for Greenland, an autonomous territory under Copenhagen’s sovereignty.
Frederiksen urged Trump to halt his threats regarding Greenland, stating: “I must say clearly to the United States that it is completely unacceptable to say that the United States should take control of Greenland”.
She stressed that the United States has no right to annex any of the three territories of the Kingdom of Denmark: Denmark itself, Greenland, and the Faroe Islands.
Her comments followed Trump’s renewed assertion of his country’s “need” for the self-governing territory. In press statements on Sunday, he said: “We absolutely need Greenland. We need it for security”.
When asked whether the military operation in Venezuela could signal what the United States might do in Greenland, Trump said during a phone interview with The Atlantic magazine: “They will have to see for themselves. I really do not know”.
Last month, the envoy recently appointed by Trump to Greenland said that the administration is seeking to open dialogue with the island’s population to explore the best ways to move forward in dealing with this strategically important region.
