Hebrew media outlets reported that Israeli occupation Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is seeking a green light from US President Donald Trump to resume war on Lebanon.
Israel’s Channel 13 quoted sources saying that Netanyahu intends to ask Trump for approval to launch a large-scale military operation against Hezbollah.
Earlier last week, Israeli media reported that the Israeli army had completed preparations for a broad assault on Hezbollah targets if the Lebanese government and army fail to fulfil their commitment to dismantle the group’s weapons before the end of 2025.
In response, Lebanese Deputy Prime Minister Tarek Mitri stated on Tuesday that there are no guarantees that Israel will refrain from launching a new escalation.
Speaking to the radio station Voice of All Lebanon, Mitri said there are no assurances or guarantees offered to Lebanon that Israel will not initiate further escalation in the coming period.
He added that excessive fear of an Israeli escalation is unjustified and not based on credible information, urging against being drawn into assessments that lack reliable data.
The Lebanese Deputy Prime Minister stressed that it is Lebanon’s duty to block any pretext that the enemy might use to attack the country. He explained that the Mechanism Committee has followed this approach by examining ways to verify the Lebanese army’s commitment to its duties under the implementation plan that was adopted.
The Mechanism Committee was established under the ceasefire agreement that has been in force since November 2024. It monitors the implementation of the agreement and includes military representatives from Lebanon, France, Israel, the United States, and the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon.
At the beginning of last August, the Lebanese Council of Ministers approved the principle of limiting weapons to the state, including Hezbollah’s arms, and tasked the army with developing and implementing a plan before the end of 2025.
However, Hezbollah Secretary General Naim Qassem has repeatedly affirmed that the group will not surrender its weapons, calling for an end to the Israeli occupation of Lebanese territory. Israel, for its part, accuses the Lebanese army of failing to enforce disarmament, accusations that Beirut rejects.
The occupation killed more than 4,000 people and injured around 17,000 others during its aggression against Lebanon, which began in October 2023. In September 2024, this aggression escalated into a full scale war.
The war officially ended with a ceasefire agreement that came into effect in November 2024. Nevertheless, Israel has violated the agreement more than 4,500 times, resulting in hundreds of killed and wounded, in addition to its occupation of five Lebanese hills seized during the latest war, along with other areas it has occupied for decades.
