In a dramatic rescue in Sribhumi district, Assam, a Muslim cleric pressed the loudspeaker of his local mosque at dawn to alert the village after a car carrying seven people skidded off the highway and plunged into a pond helping save all passengers before the vehicle sank fully.
According to police and local reports, the incident occurred late Saturday night near Neelam Bazar in Bahadurpur area. The vehicle reportedly an Eco-car lost control and fell into the water. Hearing a loud crash, the mosque’s imam, Abdul Basit, rushed outside.
On seeing headlight beams under the pond, he immediately used the mosque’s public-address system to alert villagers and call for help.
Within minutes, villagers responded, many jumped into the cold water, smashed open the car windows, and pulled all seven trapped passengers to safety. No fatality was reported.
The rescued were described as Hindu travellers returning from Silchar to Tripura gave their thanks, while locals hailed the imam’s quick action as courageous.
Local cleric Abdul Hafeez praised the rescue, calling it “a true message of humanity.” Basit, interviewed by media, said: “We did not think about religion or anything else. The priority was to save lives.”
Police officials said they were investigating the cause of the accident preliminary inquiry suggests slippery roads and low visibility as contributing factors and noted that the community rescue exemplifies quick thinking and solidarity beyond sectarian lines.
This incident has drawn widespread praise, reminding many of the power of communal harmony and human decency in moments of crisis where compassion and urgency transcended divisions, turning tragedy into survival and reinforcing faith in humanity.
