Police announced that they had opened an investigation after a woman was taken to a hospital in the capital, Zagreb, on Friday with a minor stomach injury caused by a sharp object.
Reports of the nun’s injuries spread quickly on social media, along with claims that a foreign worker or migrant had stabbed her for religious motives.
Over the weekend, additional allegations circulated that the attacker had shouted an Islamic phrase during the stabbing, prompting some to call for mass deportations.
These claims gained rapid traction in a country of 3.8 million people.
Conservative MP Marijana Petir wrote on the platform X, “The attack on the nun in Zagreb is an attack on the values of Croatian and European society, which are rooted in Christianity.”
But police stated that the 35-year-old nun had “injured herself with a knife” before filing a false report claiming she had been assaulted by an unknown man.
They added that a criminal complaint will be submitted to the public prosecutor against the nun on the charge of falsely reporting a crime.
