When the Muslim is afflicted with worry or hardship, he should draw closer to Allah Most High through supplication, acts of worship, and obedience. In Sunan Abi Dawud and others, the Messenger of Allah, صلى الله عليه وسلم, said:
ألا أعلمك كلمات تقولهن عند الكرب؟ الله، الله ربي، لا أشرك به شيئا
Transliteration:
Allahu Allahu rabbi, la ushriku bihi shaya^a
Ahmad narrated from Abdullah ibn Masud that he said: The Messenger of Allah, صلى الله عليه وسلم, said:
ما قال عبد قط إذا أصابه هم وحزن: اللهم إني عبدك وابن عبدك وابن أمتك، ناصيتي بيدك، ماض في حكمك، عدل في قضاؤك، أسألك بكل اسم هو لك، سميت به نفسك، أو أنزلته في كتابك، أو علمته أحدا من خلقك، أو استأثرت به في علم الغيب عندك، أن تجعل القرآن العظيم ربيع قلبي، ونور صدري، وجلاء حزني، وذهاب همي، إلا أذهب الله همه، وأبدله مكان حزنه فرحا. قالوا: يا رسول الله ينبغي لنا أن نتعلم هؤلاء الكلمات؟ قال: أجل، ينبغي لمن سمعهن أن يتعلمهن
Transliteration:
Allahumma inni ^abduka wabnu ^abdika wabnu amatika, nasiyati biyadik, madin fi hukmik, ^adlun fi qada^ik, as^aluka bikulli ismin huwa lak, sammayta bihi nafsak, aw anzaltahu fi kitabik, aw ^allamtahu ahadan min khalqik, aw ista^tharta bihi fi ^ilmi l ghaybi ^indak, an taj^ala l Qur^ana l ^azima rabi^a qalbi, wa nura sadri, wa jalaa^a huzni, wa dhahaba hammi
Ahmad and Abu Dawud narrated from Nufay^ ibn al Harith that the Messenger of Allah, صلى الله عليه وسلم, said:
دعوات المكروب: اللهم رحمتك أرجو، فلا تكلني إلى نفسي طرفة عين، وأصلح لي شأني كله، لا إله إلا أنت
Transliteration:
Allahumma rahmataka arju, fa la takilni ila nafsi tarfata ^ayn, wa aslih li sha^ni kullah, la ilaha illa ant
Bukhari and Muslim narrated from Ibn Abbas, رضي الله عنهما, who said: The Prophet, صلى الله عليه وسلم, would supplicate during distress saying:
لا إله إلا الله العظيم الحليم، لا إله إلا الله رب السموات والأرض ورب العرش العظيم
Transliteration:
La ilaha illa Allahu l ^azimu l halim, la ilaha illa Allahu rabbu s samawati wa l ard wa rabbu l ^arshi l ^azim
