It is authentically reported from the Messenger of Allah, صلى الله عليه وسلم, that he said:
ما أصاب أحداً قط هم ولا حزن فقال: اللهم إني عبدك وابن عبدك وابن أمتك ناصيتي بيدك ماض في حكمك عدل في قضاؤك، أسألك بكل اسم هو لك سميت به نفسك أو علمته أحداً من خلقك، أو أنزلته في كتابك، أو استأثرت به في علم الغيب عندك، أن تجعل القرآن ربيع قلبي ونور صدري وجلاء حزني وذهاب همي، إلا أذهب الله همه وحزنه وأبدله مكانه فرجاً. قال: فقيل: يا رسول الله ألا نتعلمها؟ فقال: بلى ينبغي لمن سمعها أن يتعلمها. رواه أحمد، وهو صحيح
Transliteration:
Allahumma inni ^abduka wabnu ^abdika wabnu amatika, nasiyati biyadik, madin fi hukmik, ^adlun fi qada^ik, as^aluka bikulli ismin huwa lak, sammayta bihi nafsak, aw ^allamtahu ahadan min khalqik, aw anzaltahu fi kitabik, aw ista^tharta bihi fi ^ilmi l ghaybi ^indak, an taj^ala l Qur^ana rabi^a qalbi, wa nura sadri, wa jalaa^a huzni, wa dhahaba hammi
Ahmad and Abu Dawud narrated from Nufay^ ibn al Harith that the Messenger of Allah, صلى الله عليه وسلم, said:
دعوات المكروب: اللهم رحمتك أرجو، فلا تكلني إلى نفسي طرفة عين، وأصلح لي شأني كله لا إله إلا أنت
Transliteration:
Allahumma rahmataka arju, fa la takilni ila nafsi tarfata ^ayn, wa aslih li sha^ni kullah, la ilaha illa ant
Bukhari and Muslim narrated from Ibn Abbas, رضي الله عنهما, who said: The Prophet, صلى الله عليه وسلم, would supplicate during distress saying:
لا إله إلا الله العظيم الحليم، لا إله إلا الله رب السموات والأرض ورب العرش العظيم
Transliteration:
La ilaha illa Allahu l ^azimu l halim, la ilaha illa Allahu rabbu s samawati wa l ard wa rabbu l ^arshi l ^azim
Ahmad, Abu Dawud, and Ibn Majah narrated from Asma^ bint Umays who said: The Messenger of Allah, صلى الله عليه وسلم, said to me:
ألا أعلمك كلمات تقولينهن عند الكرب، أو في الكرب: الله الله ربي لا أشرك به شيئاً
Transliteration:
Allahu Allahu rabbi la ushriku bihi shaya^a
In Sahih Bukhari, from Anas, رضي الله عنه, who said: I used to hear the Prophet, صلى الله عليه وسلم, frequently say:
اللهم إني أعوذ بك من الهم والحزن، والعجز والكسل، والبخل والجبن
Transliteration:
Allahumma inni a^udhu bika mina l hammi wa l hazan, wa l ^ajzi wa l kasal, wa l bukhli wa l jubn
In the hadith, he صلى الله عليه وسلم said: I know a phrase that no distressed person says except that Allah relieves him of it, the phrase of my brother Yunus, عليه السلام:
لا إله إلا أنت سبحانك إني كنت من الظالمين
Transliteration:
La ilaha illa anta subhanaka inni kuntu mina z zalimin
In Musnad Ahmad, the Sunan al Kubra of an Nasa^i, the Mustadrak of al Hakim, and Sahih Ibn Hibban, with the wording of Ahmad, from Ali ibn Abi Talib, رضي الله عنه, who said: The Messenger of Allah, صلى الله عليه وسلم, taught me these words, and ordered me that if distress or hardship befalls me I should say:
لا إله إلا الله الكريم الحليم، سبحانه وتبارك الله رب العرش العظيم، والحمد لله رب العالمين
Transliteration:
La ilaha illa Allahu l karimu l halim, subhanahu wa tabarak Allahu rabbu l ^arshi l ^azim, wa l hamdu lillahi rabbi l ^alamin
