US President Donald Trump has stated that the ceasefire in the Gaza Strip depends entirely on Hamas’s full compliance, warning that the Israeli occupation forces could resume fighting “with just a word” from him if the movement fails to uphold the agreement.
In a brief phone interview with CNN, Trump was asked what would happen if Hamas refused to disarm. He replied:
“Israel will return to those streets with just a word from me. If Israel can go into Gaza and eliminate them, they will do it.”
Trump emphasised his authority over the matter, saying:
“I will consider allowing Netanyahu to resume military operations if Hamas refuses to comply with the ceasefire.”
However, he acknowledged that Hamas currently plays a “positive role” in maintaining order within the Strip. He praised the movement’s control of security, saying:
“Hamas is now intervening and eliminating violent gangs,”
— referring to the movement’s initial enforcement of the security aspect of the agreement, aimed at stabilising the situation in Gaza.
Trump noted that achieving the first stage of the agreement was crucial, describing the release of prisoners from Gaza as “a matter of great importance.”
These warnings came only two days after the Sharm el-Sheikh Peace Summit, where around 20 world leaders signed a comprehensive document intended to end the war on Gaza.
Palestinian Resistance Denies Trump’s Claims
A senior source within the Palestinian resistance denied Trump’s recent remarks about the start of the second phase of the ceasefire agreement between “Israel” and Hamas, describing them as “completely untrue.”
“Negotiations for the second phase have not yet begun, and no specific date has been set,”
the source told Arabi21, explaining that Qatari and Egyptian mediators had not yet reached out to resistance factions to discuss any new phase.
The source added that, given Israeli violations of the first phase, current efforts are focused on closing the loopholes and forcing Israel to adhere to its obligations under the existing terms.
The First Phase of Trump’s Plan
On October 10, the first phase of the ceasefire and prisoner-exchange agreement came into effect under Trump’s plan.
In exchange for the release of Israeli prisoners, “Israel” freed 250 Palestinian prisoners serving life sentences, along with 1,718 others it had detained from Gaza after October 8, 2023.
Despite these releases, more than 10,000 Palestinian prisoners remain in Israeli jails — including women and children — enduring torture, starvation, and medical neglect, with many dying as a result, according to both Palestinian and Israeli human-rights reports.
The developments highlight Washington’s renewed interference in regional affairs under Trump’s administration, where the ceasefire is treated as a tool of political leverage rather than a path to justice.
While the US president portrays himself as a “mediator,” his language continues to grant military and moral impunity to the occupation, reinforcing the imbalance of power that sustains Gaza’s suffering.
