The Yemeni group Ansar Allah (Houthis) has announced the end of the truce previously agreed with the United States.
According to Reuters, the Houthis declared they would begin targeting major American oil companies, including ExxonMobil and Chevron. The Humanitarian Operations Coordination Centre, headquartered in Sana’a, stated it had placed 13 American companies, nine individuals, and two vessels on its sanctions list.
The centre, which acts as a liaison between Houthi forces and commercial shipping companies, is reported to have close ties with the movement.
Background of the Truce
In early May, Oman successfully mediated between the Houthis and the United States, resulting in a temporary ceasefire and de-escalation.
Arab states welcomed Oman’s efforts, which obliged the Houthis to halt attacks on shipping vessels in the Red Sea in return for Washington suspending its near-daily airstrikes on Yemen.
Omani Foreign Minister Badr Al-Busaidi explained at the time:
“After discussions and communications between Oman, the United States, and the authorities in Sana’a aimed at reducing escalation, efforts have resulted in an agreement to ceasefire between the two parties. In the future, neither side will target the other, including American vessels in the Red Sea and Bab al-Mandab Strait.”
From that point, American bombardments of Yemen stopped, while the Houthis refrained from striking US ships.
Continued Support for Palestine
Despite the truce with Washington, the Houthis continued their strikes against Israeli occupation sites using drones and ballistic missiles. The movement repeatedly affirmed that its operations will persist in support of Gaza until the genocide, now entering its second year, is brought to an end.
