The Israeli occupation army announced on Thursday the killing of four of its officers—one holding the rank of major and three lieutenants—along with the wounding of five others, three of them critically, after a powerful explosive device detonated in the Al-Junaina neighbourhood east of Rafah, in the southern Gaza Strip.
According to a statement broadcast by Army Radio, the explosion occurred during ongoing military operations inside the area, which the occupation forces had previously considered “secure” in Rafah’s Al-Junaina district.
The statement confirmed that the blast targeted a Humvee military vehicle during a mission to search for tunnels, despite the presence of an armoured bulldozer leading the unit in order to clear the path.
The ambush sent shockwaves through the Israeli military establishment, particularly because it struck in a zone the occupation claims to have brought under “full control,” after demolishing and flattening its buildings.
Hebrew-language accounts noted that the soldiers had resorted to using light Humvee vehicles in Rafah, under the assumption that the district was completely secure. Today’s explosion, however, proved otherwise—reportedly taking place near the Philadelphi Corridor, a critical strategic axis.
Images circulated online, leaked by occupation soldiers, revealed the wreckage of the destroyed vehicle, completely torn apart by the blast. The army was ultimately forced to bring in a crane to remove the shattered remains from the site.
