The Israeli War Ministry announced on Sunday that nearly 20,000 soldiers have been wounded since the beginning of the genocidal war on the Gaza Strip on October 7, 2023.
According to the Hebrew daily Haaretz, the ministry confirmed that approximately 1,000 soldiers each month are filing new requests to have their injuries officially recognised — a figure that highlights the scale of Israel’s mounting human losses.
Psychological Trauma Dominates Casualties
The data revealed that over half of the wounded soldiers suffer from psychological trauma, with expectations that the number will double in the next three years.
The financial cost of treating soldiers with psychological injuries has already surged to 8.3 billion shekels (around $2.5 billion USD), half of which is directed toward trauma-related care. This comes amid a severe shortage of medical staff, where the current ratio stands at one therapist for every 750 patients.
One-Quarter of Israel’s Wounded Came from the Gaza War
The ministry further noted that 81,000 soldiers have been wounded in Israel’s various wars since October 2023, meaning that a quarter of them (20,000) fell during the current war on Gaza.
Although new psychological treatment centres have been established, officials admitted that existing laws are inadequate to address the crisis, urging the passage of new legislation to accelerate services for the injured.
A special committee is reportedly drafting a law to confront the rapid rise in casualties.
Discrepancies in Official Figures
However, these numbers conflict with statistics from the Israeli army’s official website, which as of September 14 claimed that the total number of wounded stood at 6,230 soldiers — far lower than the ministry’s tally.
Wider Regional Aggression
Since June, Israel has also launched an assault on Iran, while continuing its two-year-long genocide in Gaza, alongside repeated attacks in the West Bank, and air raids on Lebanon, Syria, and Yemen. Most recently, it carried out a strike targeting Hamas leadership in Qatar.
With full American backing, the occupation’s war on Gaza has now entered its second year, leaving:
- 64,871 martyrs
- 164,610 wounded Palestinians, the majority children and women
- Hundreds of thousands displaced
- 422 deaths from famine, including 145 children
