For the second consecutive year, the name Muhammad has secured the top spot among baby boy names in the United Kingdom, according to the latest data released by the UK’s Office for National Statistics (ONS). Close behind in second place was the name Noah.
Muhammad was given to 5,721 newborn boys, making it the most popular male name in five out of nine regions across England. The continued rise of this name reflects the enduring cultural and religious presence of Islam in British society.
Meanwhile, the British newspaper The Jewish Chronicle drew attention to the notable entrance of the name Yahya into the top 100 most popular boys’ names in England and Wales. The publication linked the growing popularity of the name to Yahya Sinwar, the former leader of the Islamic Resistance Movement Hamas in the Gaza Strip and a widely recognised figure of Palestinian resistance.
The paper reported that “Yahya” climbed 33 spots compared to the previous year, ranking as the 93rd most common male baby name in the United Kingdom by the end of 2024.
Although the direct connection between the rise in the name’s popularity and the martyred leader of Hamas has not been confirmed, the wider context suggests an indirect link. The mass mobilisation of solidarity with Palestine in the UK following the Israeli war on Gaza expanded dramatically, encompassing numerous British organisations and grassroots movements that have increasingly framed the Palestinian cause as a global symbol of justice and liberation.
On Thursday, 17 October 2024, Yahya Sinwar was martyred during an armed confrontation with Israeli occupation forces in Rafah, southern Gaza. Despite suffering critical injuries, he refused to surrender. Israel had targeted Sinwar as one of the central architects of Operation Al-Aqsa Flood on 7 October 2023, a pivotal resistance operation that inflicted severe military and intelligence losses on Israel and exposed the vulnerabilities of its security establishment before the world.
