Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan delivered a powerful address during the opening session of the 55th Council of Foreign Ministers of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), held in Istanbul on Saturday. In his remarks, Erdogan condemned Israeli aggression against Iran, describing it as “unacceptable bullying,” and emphasised that regional security can only be achieved through diplomacy and Islamic solidarity—not through destructive wars.
Speaking from the Lütfi Kırdar International Convention Center, Erdogan warned that the region cannot endure another war, stressing that what is needed now is “wisdom, not escalation.” He called upon influential states to resist being misled by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s toxic rhetoric, which he accused of fueling conflict and fragmenting the region.
Erdogan expressed hope that the outcomes of the OIC gathering—taking place at a pivotal moment in the region’s history—would help catalyse international action to halt the war and devastation, particularly recalling the sacrifice of over 55,000 Palestinian martyrs in Gaza, killed by the Israeli occupation forces.
“Their pain is our pain. Their sorrow is our sorrow,” he said.
Addressing the escalation between Iran and Israel, the Turkish president stated:
“I strongly condemn Israel’s attacks on Iran. What Iran is facing is bullying in every sense of the word. We believe the Iranian people—with their history and resilience—will overcome this phase. What Tehran has done is a legitimate defense of its sovereignty in the face of state terrorism.”
Erdogan also accused Israel of undermining peace in the region, saying that instead of seeking coexistence with an independent Palestinian state with Jerusalem as its capital, the Israeli regime is spreading war and chaos throughout the Middle East. He pointed directly at Netanyahu’s government as “the greatest obstacle to any path toward peace.”
Drawing a stark historical comparison, Erdogan warned that Israel’s expansionist ambitions echo the spark that ignited World War II under Hitler, declaring:
“Netanyahu’s ambitions can only lead to regional and global catastrophe. We will not allow a new Sykes-Picot to be drawn—this time with the blood of the innocent.”
He reaffirmed the importance of Islamic unity during this critical juncture, stating:
“We may differ in approach, but our destiny is shared. The fate of Muslims is one, and it is our duty to rise above our divisions and stand united. This summit must result in a clear stance that condemns Israeli aggression and strengthens Islamic cooperation.”
In his concluding remarks, Erdogan warned that:
“Those who do not carry their causes in their minds become tools in the hands of others.”
He called on the Islamic Ummah to demonstrate courage and unity in the face of ongoing violations against its people.
The session addressed a range of political, humanitarian, and developmental issues confronting the Muslim world amid intensifying regional and global crises. This marks the fourth time Turkey has hosted the OIC foreign ministers’ meeting, following previous sessions in 1976, 1991, and 2004.
Founded in 1969 following the arson attack on Al-Aqsa Mosque, the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation includes 57 member states and aims to strengthen solidarity and cooperation among Muslim nations across various fields.
