The New York Times has reported that Iran has prepared missiles and other military assets for strikes on U.S. bases in the Middle East if the United States joins Israel’s war against Tehran.
Citing officials with access to classified intelligence reports, the paper stated that if hostilities break out, Iran may begin laying naval mines in the Strait of Hormuz—a strategic move aimed at trapping U.S. warships operating in the Arabian Gulf.
The report added that American involvement in the war would almost certainly trigger the resumption of attacks by the Iran-aligned Houthis on vessels in the Red Sea. Additionally, Iran-backed groups in Iraq and Syria may also begin targeting U.S. military installations.
U.S. Forces on High Alert Across the Region
According to the Times, U.S. troops across the region—numbering over 40,000 soldiers—have been placed on high alert, with military bases across the Middle East entering a heightened state of readiness.
In anticipation of a broader conflict, the U.S. has reportedly deployed approximately 30 aerial refueling aircraft to Europe, which could be used either to extend the range of strike bombers or to support fighter jets tasked with defending U.S. assets.
Several U.S. officials acknowledged that Israel would require American military support to deal a heavier blow to Iran’s nuclear infrastructure. This assistance could include aerial coverage for Israeli commando forces operating inside Iranian territory.
The Role of U.S. B-2 Bombers
Officials cited in the report suggested that the most likely scenario involves a strike by U.S. B-2 bombers, which are equipped with bunker-busting munitions capable—at least theoretically—of penetrating the mountain that shelters Iran’s underground Fordow nuclear facility.
Iranian Response: Immediate Retaliation on U.S. Bases
On the other side of the equation, two senior Iranian officials confirmed that Tehran would retaliate by targeting U.S. military bases across the Middle East, starting with those located in Iraq, if the United States joins Israel’s offensive.
They further emphasized that any U.S. base in Arab countries participating in the attack would also be treated as a legitimate target.
The Iranian officials clarified that Tehran would not require significant preparation to launch these attacks, as Iranian missile sites are already within striking range of multiple U.S. military installations in the region.
This work demands time, pressure, and sacrifice.
