In a significant development reported by Axios, four informed sources revealed that the White House is currently in discreet discussions with Tehran to arrange a potential meeting this week between U.S. envoy Brett McGurk and Iran’s Deputy Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi.
The goal of this high-stakes meeting, according to the sources, is to explore a framework for a new nuclear agreement and to prevent the escalating confrontation between Israel and Iran from spiralling into a full-scale regional war. The Trump administration reportedly floated the proposal for direct talks with Iran during a closed-door meeting on Monday.
The New York Times also cited a senior official stating that President Donald Trump instructed both his vice president and his Middle East envoy to urgently offer talks with Iranian representatives this week.
Earlier, Trump had issued a stark warning to civilians, calling for an immediate evacuation of Tehran. He reiterated, “Iran should have signed the agreement we asked of them. I’ve said it time and again — Iran must never acquire a nuclear weapon.”
Speaking to reporters at the G7 Summit in Kananaskis, Canada, on Monday, Trump suggested that Iran is growing desperate to de-escalate the conflict with Israel. “Iran is not winning this war,” he said firmly.
When asked if he had received any signals or backchannel messages from intermediaries indicating Iran’s willingness to negotiate, Trump replied:
“They want to negotiate — but they should have done that earlier. I had a 60-day window, they had 60 days, and on day 61, I said: We have no deal.”
He continued, “They need to make a deal. This is painful for both sides. But Iran is not winning, and they must come to the table. They need to negotiate now, before it’s too late.”
Trump’s remarks came shortly after The Wall Street Journal published a report citing Middle Eastern and European officials claiming that Iran is “urgently signaling a desire to end hostilities and resume talks over its nuclear program.” According to the report, Iran has been sending indirect messages to both Israel and the United States via Arab intermediaries.
Earlier this spring, President Trump gave Iran a 60-day deadline to reach a nuclear agreement or face consequences. On Friday — the 61st day — Israel launched unprecedented airstrikes on Iranian territory, targeting military leaders and nuclear infrastructure. The conflict has now entered its fourth day, with intense missile exchanges between the two sides.
While Trump refrained from revealing whether the U.S. would intervene militarily, he commented:
“I don’t want to talk about that.”
He added, “We have always strongly supported Israel — and Israel is doing very well right now.”
This work demands time, pressure, and sacrifice.
But we do it—for the Ummah, and for the truth.
