A leaked diplomatic cable has revealed that the administration of former U.S. President Donald Trump urged world governments to avoid attending a United Nations conference on the two-state solution, scheduled to take place next week in New York.
According to the cable, which was sent on Tuesday, any countries that take actions deemed “anti-Israel” after the conference may be viewed as acting against U.S. foreign policy interests, and could face diplomatic consequences from Washington.
The cable further warns that the United States will oppose any unilateral moves to recognise a so-called Palestinian state, reaffirming Washington’s staunch alignment with the Israeli position.
The UN’s Last Hope?
President of the UN General Assembly, Filimon Yang, stated last month that the upcoming high-level international conference on the peaceful resolution of the Palestinian issue — set for June 17–20 in New York — represents “a critical opportunity that must be seized to chart an irreversible path toward implementing the two-state solution.”
Yang stressed the importance of ensuring the conference’s success, describing it as vital to restoring momentum toward a peaceful and just resolution.
“This conflict cannot be resolved through endless war, nor through perpetual occupation or annexation,” he declared.“It will only end when Israelis and Palestinians can live side by side, in two sovereign and independent states, in peace, security, and dignity.”
70 Years of Ignored Promises
Yang reminded the global community that it has been over seven decades since the General Assembly first called for a two-state solution. Since then, the UN has repeatedly reaffirmed its commitment to this vision through numerous resolutions — many of which have been systematically ignored or undermined.
He continued:
“We now bear the collective responsibility to act decisively and bring these resolutions to life.We must support international law, uphold the principles of the UN Charter, and restore faith in the United Nations, the international community, and our obligations toward both the Palestinian and Israeli peoples.”
