As part of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia’s preparations for the Hajj season of 1446 AH, the General Authority for the Affairs of the Grand Mosque and the Prophet’s Mosque announced on Wednesday the annual lifting of the lower part of the Kiswa—the revered black cloth that drapes the Kaaba in Makkah.
The lower section of the cloth was raised by three meters, a precautionary measure carried out each year to preserve and protect the sacred covering during the peak pilgrimage season, which witnesses intense crowd density around the Kaaba.

According to the Saudi Press Agency (SPA), the process of lifting the Kiswa involves technical precision and specialised expertise. It begins by gently detaching the lower sections, followed by separating the fabric from the four corners, and then raising it to a height of three meters.
A white cotton cloth is then carefully secured in place, and the ornamental lanterns (qandils) are repositioned at their designated points. The entire process is overseen by highly trained teams to protect the Kaaba’s sanctity, ensuring the cloth is not subjected to damage or direct contact from the overwhelming number of pilgrims performing Tawaf (circumambulation).

Spiritual and Organisational Significance
This annual tradition is not merely technical—it carries deep spiritual and logistical significance. The primary objective is to protect the Kiswa from wear, tear, and erosion caused by close physical contact during the intense days of Hajj.
The practice also reinforces the sanctity and symbolism of the Kaaba by ensuring it remains visibly intact and unblemished—a reflection of reverence and responsibility in managing Islam’s holiest site.
The procedure is conducted with full coordination among all relevant authorities, ensuring that the rituals of Hajj continue smoothly without disruption.
Comprehensive Hajj Preparations Underway
The lifting of the Kiswa is part of a broader operational effort led by Saudi authorities to prepare for the millions of pilgrims expected this year. These preparations include:
-
- Organising the entrance and exit routes to the Haram
-
- Expanding pilgrim movement corridors
-
- Ensuring medical and logistical readiness
-
- Monitoring the full operational status of Hajj facilities
Officials emphasised that all preparations reflect the sacredness of time and place, and are being implemented in a way that honours the spiritual significance of the pilgrimage.
The Kiswa: A Symbol of Craftsmanship and Faith
The Kiswa of the Kaaba is crafted from pure black silk at a dedicated factory in Makkah, and embroidered with Qur’anic verses using threads made from gold and silver. Its production requires:
-
- Over 200 kilograms of gold and silver thread
-
- More than 200 specialised artisans
-
- A final weight of over 800 kilograms
The Kiswa is completely replaced every year on the Day of Arafah, the most sacred day of Hajj.
