There is a myth repeated by critics and even some Muslims: that Islam is a “desert religion,” a faith suited only for the Arabs of the 7th century, too rigid to thrive beyond its birthplace.
But history, hearts, and reality tell a different story.
Islam was not made for a place. It was made for the soul. It was not confined to sand. It was crafted for every land. It did not belong to a race. It belongs to truth itself.

I. Islam Speaks the Language of Fiţrah
The Qur’an addresses the human being — not just the Arab, not just the man, not just the scholar.
“O mankind, worship your Lord, who created you and those before you, that you may become righteous.” (Qur’an 2:21)
Islam speaks to fiţrah — the innate purity and recognition of Allah within every soul. It calls to what we already know deep inside:
-
- That there is one Creator
-
- That justice is noble
-
- That modesty is beautiful
-
- That mercy is strength
No desert, mountain, or city can change the truths Islam came to awaken.
II. Islam Conquered Hearts Before It Conquered Lands
Islam spread across continents not by force, but by fiţrah:
-
- Africa: Islam entered East Africa through trade and da’wah centuries before any battles.
-
- Southeast Asia: Indonesia, the largest Muslim country today, was not conquered but embraced Islam through merchants and preachers.
-
- Europe: Spain embraced Islam for over 700 years, producing scholars, scientists, poets, and architects.
-
- China: Muslim communities flourished under dynasties that admired their honesty and character.
Wherever Islam went, it adapted without losing its essence — because it never belonged to a desert. It belonged to hearts ready to hear the truth.
III. Islam Gave the World Universality Before Globalisation Existed
Long before the internet, Islam connected humanity:
-
- One prayer direction (Qiblah)
-
- One universal greeting (As-Salamu ‘Alaykum)
-
- One brotherhood transcending race, tribe, and status
The Prophet Muhammad صلى الله عليه وسلم said:
“There is no superiority of an Arab over a non-Arab, nor a non-Arab over an Arab… except by piety.” — (Ahmad, authenticated)
Islam unified hearts from the Sahara to Sarajevo, from Jakarta to Jerusalem.
IV. Why They Want You to Believe Islam Is “Foreign”
When they call Islam “foreign,” they are not protecting culture — they are protecting control.
A people rooted in tawheed cannot be colonised. A youth proud of Islam cannot be seduced by materialism. A soul anchored in Qur’an will not drown in confusion.
They want Islam to feel strange so you feel ashamed. But Allah already told us:
“Indeed, this religion began as something strange, and it will return to being strange, so blessed are the strangers.” — (Sahih Muslim)
Conclusion
Islam didn’t emerge from a desert. It emerged from the Lord of the Worlds. It wasn’t sent to a tribe. It was sent to all of mankind.
From the skyscrapers of New York to the villages of Africa, from the rice fields of Malaysia to the alleys of Damascus, the call to prayer still rises.
Because Islam is not geography. Islam is fiţrah. Islam is life. Islam is truth.
