Is Copper T Allowed in Islam?

Someone asked this question: “Can you, please, clarify the issue of permissible birth control methods? I understand that it is permissible to use reversible birth control methods e.g. pills. Does the use of intra-uterine devices such as copper T fall into this category of permissible birth control method?“

Responding to your question, Dr. Hatem Al-Hajj, Dean of the College of Islamic Studies at Mishkah University and a member of the Permanent Fatwa Committee for the Assembly of Muslim Jurists in America (AMJA), states:

IUDs are a mode of topical contraception that is recommended by many physicians over other forms of contraception, for it has fewer side effects according to them.

Based on that, there is no harm in using it.

It remains to be said that this method of contraception requires uncovering the most private parts and because of the lack of urgency, you should first seek a female physician to do it for you.

As for other forms of birth control, they are permissible as long as they are not permanent and they are not harmful, or at least their harm doesn’t exceed their benefit.
