The Ottawa Police Service (OPS) has observed a slight decrease of 2% in reported incidents motivated by hate and bias from the beginning of 2024 compared to the same period last year.
As of now in 2024, there have been 225 reported incidents, with 174 classified as criminal and 51 as non-criminal but hate-motivated. Twenty-six individuals face charges for 65 hate-motivated offences, including four receiving formal warnings under the YCJA.

In 2023, there were 230 reported incidents, with 178 classified as criminal and 52 as non-criminal but hate-motivated.
Communities most impacted by these incidents in 2024 include:

- Black community: 36 incidents

- Muslim community: 15 incidents (up from 7 in 2023, a more than 100% increase)

- Arab (West Asian, Middle Eastern, and North African) community: 14 incidents
The OPS Hate and Bias Crime Unit is actively collaborating with the Crown Attorney’s office to thoroughly investigate all reported incidents.
Each hate-motivated incident not only affects the individuals targeted but also has a profound impact on the neighborhoods and communities where they occur, underscores the Ottawa Police Service.
